BEFORE & AFTER: a $1000 makeover

This is a classic example of a quick and dirty room makeover with only $1000 in design fees. The clients wanted to do the work themselves and had definite design ideas of their own. However, as busy working parents, they had no time and no idea where to even start. I popped over and did the following for their family room: suggested they re-orient the room towards the fireplace and place the TV over the mantle. I advised them to remove the side built-ins and the weird demi-walls on either side. I suggested painting the room a lighter, neutral color and refinishing the floors a darker color. Then, knowing they have three kids and two dogs (including a puppy!) I presented them with two sample layouts, each one suitable for kids and dogs. One layout included a comfy leather ottoman, per the wife’s request. The other suggested a cool raw edge wood coffee table, per the husband’s preference. Both layouts made use of two wine leather chairs they already owned. Then I walked away and they did the rest! They picked my layout #2, per below, and took advantage of my 20% discount to save $1500, more than they spent on me. The new fireplace was all their design; they decided to stick with their current wall color, added their own accessories and refinished the floors in the same honey tone. They are delighted with the result, and I’m delighted for them!
